†HATCH, n.4 = Hack, n.1, 7., a chip made in the ice at curling to give support to the player's foot while delivering the stone (Sc. 1811 J. Ramsay Curling 60). [An extended use of Eng. hatch, to cut or score lines on, poss. thought of as the southern form of hack as kirk, church, etc.]
