Scots Dictionary for Schools app
Voted Scots Project o the Year 2021
Produced for young Scots learners everywhere, the Scots Dictionary for Schools app provides meanings in English for 9,500 Scots words and phrases. Covering everyday terms like glaikit ‘stupid’, mind ‘to remember’ and outwith ‘outside of’, to words now encountered mainly on Burns Night, e.g. sonsie ‘attractive’, drouthy ‘thirsty’ and painch ‘stomach’, the app also includes audio pronunciation guides for 600 difficult spellings.
The Scots Dictionary for Schools app is free to use and is designed especially for:
- Everyone aged 8 to 18 who speaks, reads, or writes Scots or would like to do so
- Everyone studying Scots as a modern language
- Everyone studying for an SQA Award in Scots Language
- Everyone teaching Scots at primary or secondary level
Through its extensive coverage of the poetry of Burns and the Scots found in other set classroom texts, the Scots Dictionary for Schools app helps Scotland’s young learners engage confidently and positively with the Scots they encounter in school, at home, and in everyday life.
Originally published in 2014, the Scots Dictionary for Schools app is based on the text of our Essential Scots Dictionary. The current (second) edition was launched on 25 January 2021 and features improved content, a brand new app design, and 600 new, professionally recorded pronunciation guides.
