HAGRI, Hagra, n. Found only in phr. to ride (march) da (the) hagri (hagra), to ride the marches, beat the bounds (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928)). Also found in pl. form hagries. Now hist.Sc. 1772 in A. C. O'Dell Hist. Geog. Shet. (1939) 240:
In the memory of man, there was a Judicial procession of the Inhabitants once in every 3 or 4 years, to inspect and recognize the boundaries of these Scattalds . . . This procession was called riding the hagra . . . It was solemnised in one or two parishes in or about the year 1745.
Sh. 1845 Stat. Acc.2 XV. 64:
I have heard some old people who were present, describe what took place at these riding of the marches, called “riding the Hagra.”
Sh. 1908 Old-Lore Misc. I. vii. 270:
Auld Daa had kaishin to mind upa dat riding o da hagries.
