Kendaly(e, Kentdalee, Kendilly(e, n. Also : kendalie; kentdalé; kendeley, -del(l)ie, -dellé; -dil(l)é. [Corresp. to ME. and e.m.E. kendale (1389), -dal(l, the name of the cloth, f. Kendal in Westmorland (on the river Kent), the place of manufacture. Cf. Kendall and Kendilling.The explan. of the -ee, -y suffix is not clear.]
Kendal cloth; a kind of coarse woollen cloth or frieze, of green colour. Freq. grene kentdale(e, kendellie, etc. Also attrib. with cote.(a) 1497 Treas. Acc. I. 340.
