Woup, Wap, Wep, Wyp, v. Also: wowp(e, woop, wolp, vap, weap, wip, wewp. [Late ME and e.m.E. wap(p (c1425), wappe (York Myst.), whappyn, wappon, -yn (all Prompt. Parv.) to wrap, envelop; whyppyn (Prompt. Parv.), whip(p (1561) to bind with cord, whip (a1548, 1592) to sew with overcast stitches, MLG, Du. wippen to move up and down or to and fro. Cf. also Woup n. There may be some influence from or confusion with Wrap v.¹]
