†STAY, n. A stile, a set of steps leading over a wall or fence. Also in n.Eng. dial. Comb. stay-dike, id.Gall. 1731 Session Bk. Penninghame (1933) II 165:
As they went over the stay dike they heard one of the clock strike.

[The -ay phs. represents a diphthongal form of Stee, q.v. Cf. n.Eng. dial. stee, stey, Mid.Eng. stie, stegh, O.N. stigi, stegi, a ladder, steps.]
