Lard, Laird, n.1 Also: larde, larid, lairde, layrd, lerd, leird, leard. [North. ME. lard (Cursor M.), e.m.E. (once) leard (1560–77), contracted f. laverd Lavird n.: cf. Lord n.]

1. One who has dominion over others; a prince, chief or lord. Also fig.The more common, and after Douglas the regular, word for this is Lord n. 1384 Slater Early Sc. Texts No. 5.
