(Rin-mart,) Rin-mairt, n. Also: ryn-, ryne-, rynne- and -mart(e, -mert; rymart. [Mart n.1 The origin of the first element is uncertain, but it may be f. Gael. roinn portion, division, share. See also Rin-cariage, -muttoun, -wethir.In favour of a Gaelic derivation is the fact that rin- in this application is appar. recorded only in what were once Gaelic-speaking areas. The force of rin- in these compounds is uncertain, but it may have reference either to the fact that the payment or service referred to was a portion of what was due to the superior, or to the fact that part of the value of the service or goods was paid by the superior.] An ox or cow handed over as payment in kind of part of the rent due to a feudal superior. In partial return the tenant was paid a sum considerably lower than the market price of the animal (see Exch. R. VI lxxi). Also attrib. with silver, a cash payment handed over instead of the animal.1459 Exch. R. VI 529.
