(Lade-,) Laid-gal(l)on(e, n. Also: ladd-, lead-, led-, leid- and -galloun(e, -gallen. [f. ME. and e.m.E. lade v. to lade, bale, ladle (a liquid), (also (cf. Lade v.) to load); and Gallon n. : mod. midl. Eng. dial. has lade-gawn, -gaun, -gorn (also lade-bucket, -pail, -skip etc.), and cf. midl. ME. ladebolle (1420), and e.m.E. (midl.) lademeale (1579), lad payle (1558), all in the same or similar senses. Cf. also Lagallo(u)n, Laglein, and Ladillgallone.] A kind of vessel used for ladling and carrying liquids.? Generally, or ? always, one of cooper's work, appar. a kind of wooden pail with a handle.Appar. orig. applied only to a large ladle of this sort used in brewing, but also latterly as used for various other purposes. c1420 Bute MS. 162 b.
