Lingal, Linale, Lynȝell, n. Also: linggell, lingȝeile. [Late ME. (1460) and e.m.E. lingell, lyngell, strap, spatula, late ME. lengell (15th c., OED.), appar. repr. an AF. *lengle, L. li(n)gula, strap. thong, spoon, dim. of lingua tongue. In the mod. dial. appar. only Sc., as lingle thong, strap, rope or string for tying or fastening. The Older Sc. forms lingȝeile, lynȝell appar. result from some confusion with Linyel n., though this is (in Sc.) recorded only later.] A thong or strap; a tether or a hobble for an animal (cf. Lingit and Langald); a band, tie, latchet; ? a bandage. — 1513 Doug. ix. xi. 5 (R).
