Mantil(l, n.2 Also: mantyll, mantle. [OF. mantel, manteau (1456, Godef. Compl.), e.m.E. mantel(l (1545), mantle; ? f. Mantil(l,n.1] A set of skins of fur containing a specific number. a. sing. b. plur. c. coll.‘The package was prob. so named because it contained sufficient for the lining of a mantle; and the number of pieces it contained necessarily varied considerably, according to the kind of fur it contained, and because it sometimes consisted of whole skins, and sometimes of special parts of skins’ (Donaldson, Suppl. to Jam.). For indications of the number of skins to mantles of various sorts of fur, see espec. quots. 1491 (b below), 1496 (a below) and 1612 Bk. Rates (Halyb.) 305–7: it will be seen that the numbers are freq. 60 or 30.a. 1473 Treas. Acc. I. 15.
