[ME. and e.m.E. parel (Cursor M.), -il (Chaucer), -yll (Lydgate), -ell (Caxton), var. of peril Peril(l n.] Peril.The first syllable, as in Peril(l n., is freq. written with a scribal abbreviation; but the following are some attested examples of par- before c 1550: a1400 Leg.
