Parochin, -en, -o(u)n(e, Paroschin, n. Also: parroch-, parach-, parwch-; peroch-, perroch-; parrosch-; parosh-, paras- and -ine, -ing, -yn(e, -an(e, -ein(e, -en(n, -oin, -ioun(e, -eoun; also paraheine; prochin, -yn, -ene; and Pariochin(e. [North midl. ME. paroschen (Manning), otherwise appar. only Sc.Related to Paroch(e n. and Parochinar n., but the origin of the ending -in is, as with Paris(c)hin, obscure.ME. had paroschian (Ancr. R.), paroschen (c 1325), -iene (Piers Plowman), also paroisshien (15th c.), also parochien (1357), parochen (14th c.), OF. paroissien f. paroisse, OF. also parochien, -in, med. L. parochianus, n. parishioner, a. of a parish. But derivation f. this adj. taken as an attrib. noun is difficult in view of the rare and late appearance of the attrib. use of the present word. The fact that Paroch(e n., Parisch(e n. are at first largely confined to attrib. use makes the matter still more puzzling.]
