Privé, Privy, Prevé, Prevy, adj., n. and adv. Also: priw-, pryv-, pryw-, prew- and -ee, -ey, -ei, -ye, -ie, -ay(e, -a(e, preivie, prievie; (prif). [ME and e.m.E. privé (Ancr. R.), pryvé (Manning), privei, -ee, -ey (14th–15th c.), prevé (Cursor M.), -ey (Chaucer), -y (Trevisa), F. privé (12th c. in Littré), as noun AF (13th c.), L. prīvāt-us Privat adj.fully attested forms in e no doubt represent a normal Sc. development of ĭ to e: in open syllable. However, some scribes, such as that of the E MS of Barb., use the same superscript abbreviation for re (as in presence; Barb. 1 20) as for ri (as in price; Barb. 1 25). In this case the decision of a text editor whether to transcribe preué or priué, etc., may be arbitrary. In this Dictionary we have followed the decisions of the text editors (in the case of Barb.
