ME whethen, queþen etc. (12–13th c.), ON hvaðan, with assimil. of vowel to hethen Hyn(e, sethen Syne, thethen Thyne. Cf. Quhen adv.2 and Quhence.] Whence.Also preceded by redundant fra or of.
