S(c)hallop, n. Also: schalop, s(c)hallope, schollab, schellop(e, schelepe, (scallope). [e.m.E. shallop (1590), shalop (1619), F. chaloupe; var. of Challop n. Cf. Du. sloep.]

a. A boat, propelled by oars or by sail, for use in shallow waters, or to serve larger vessels as an auxiliary, supply boat, or the like. b. A large heavy sea-going boat, rigged fore and aft, appar. freq. used as an auxiliary to warships, and sometimes armed, also, a man of war shallope.There is some ambiguity between senses a and b.a. 1572 Treas.
