When, as in Acts, the text is diplomatic, this contraction has been expanded to schir- for the purposes of the following articles.

An officer appointed by the king (orig., ? by David I) to maintain the king's peace in a designated area of the realm (a sheriffdom), to administer the law therein, and to implement any part of the royal policy when commanded to do so by the king.The earliest known reference to the officer is as vicecomes in a Latin charter of 1120 (Early Chart. 28).See further Dickinson Fife Sheriff Ct.
