[ME and e.m.E. cirurgian (1297), surgien (Manning), -gen (c1350), sirurgien (Chaucer), -geoun (c1400), -gyen (Lydgate), -geon (Malory), cerurgien (15th c.), sowrgeon (1511-12), surgean (1551), surgeant (1557), AF surgien, sirogen, sur(r)igien, OF serurgien, cirurgien (all OED).] A surgeon, one specif. concerned with healing wounds, broken bones, etc. or complaints requiring surgical intervention.
