Wast(e, Waist, adj. Also: vast(e, wayst, vaist, vayst, waest, west, weist, weyst, weast, uesten, (wasts). [ME and e.m.E. wesste (Orm), west(e (both Layamon), waste (c1290), wast (Cursor M.), waast (c1430), waist(e (both 1535), OE wéste, OF wast var. of guast, MDu. woest, LG wöst, L. vāstus.]
1. a. Of (an area of) land, a country: Uncultivated; uninhabited, not built on; wild, desolate; barren; ruined as the result of invasion. b. Of a building: Uninhabited, empty, unused; derelict, ruinous through invasion or neglect.In attrib.use chiefly with land.
