Woup, Wip, n. Also: woupe, vo(u)p, wowp, woop(e, wolp, wyp, weyp. [e.m.E. wap (1545) a turn of string wrapped round something; whip (a1553) a sudden movement, whip(p (1583) a turning movement, whippe (1592) an overcast stitch, MLG wip(pe a quick movement, leap, skip (Quhip n. 3); Goth. wipja a crown, ON veipr a head-dress, LG wiep a twist of straw, OHG weif a bandage; one element may be var. of or influenced by Hup(e n.]
