1. Abstract, abridgment. A term used in adjudication and in sequestration. Sc. 1716 Wodrow Corresp. (1843) II. 155:
This is an abbreviate of this attempt.Sc. 1824 Scott Redgauntlet Letter xiii.:
“I have made a short abbreviate, Mr Peebles,” said he; “having sat up late last night, and employed much of this morning in wading through these papers.”
I made application to the D[uke] of Marl[borough] for ane abreviat as Capt. in the Regmt. [Lat. abbreviatum.]
