Amazon, Amason, n. Also: Amazown, Amasone. [ME. pl. Amazones (Chaucer), Amysones, L. Amazonēs from Greek. Wyntoun has both the L. and Sc. plurals.] An Amazon; a strong masculine woman. Also attrib. —c1420 Wynt. i. 986 (quhare Amazonys [C. Amazownys, W. Amasons] duelland were): 1048; ii. 1503. 1513 Doug. xi. xiii. 4 (a wench Amazon); 25 (the wenchys Amazonys). 1615 Melrose P. 207 (weemen of the bangstar amasone kinde).
