W. Note on the letter.Throughout the Older Scots period, w was used to represent the consonants w and v and the vowel u. In consonant position, w and v are freely interchangeable and u is used regularly only by particular authors (e.g. James VI). In vowel position, u, v and w are freely interchangeable.In the listing of variant spellings, both u and v are listed as variants of w where they occur. The spellings uu and vv have been normalised to w.1684 Symson Descr. Galloway in Macfarlane's Geog. Coll. II 120 (see V1).
