Level(l, -all, Lavell, n. Also: leavel(l. [ME. (1340) and e.m.E. level(l, lewel, e.m.E. leavell, OF. livel (13th c., later nivel, mod. F. niveau).]
1. A level, the builder's or other craftsman's instrument. Also fig.Be lyne and levall, see Line n. 1 b (2).1591 Edinb. D. Guild Acc. 440.
