Outland, n. Also: owt-, wit-. [ME. outland (Manning) foreigner, owt-lond (?a 1400), e.m.E. owte lande (1551), foreign land, Amer. Eng. outlandes pl. (1676) outlying lands, OE. útland outlying land of an estate, foreign land.] Land held in addition to but lying outside a principal holding or principal estate. Also pl. in same sense.In Orkney: land which formed part of an udal estate but lay outside the ‘hede-bule’ or principal farm.plur. 1458 Cart. S. Nich. Aberd. I. iii.
