Promote, v. Also: promot, prommott, promitt. [e.m.E. and ME promote (Trevisa), L. prōmōt- p.p. stem of prōmovēre Promov(e. Cf. 14th c. F. promoter to instigate.] a. tr. To advance the cause or interests of (a person). b. To prefer or promote (a person) (to high rank or office or to an academic degree). = Promov(e v. 1. c.
