Referendare, -er, -ir, -frendare, n. (OF referendare (1320 in Larousse), F. référendaire (late 14th c. in Larousse), med. L. referendarius, referendary, master of requests. Cf. e.m.E. referendary (a title given at various times to certain officials in the papal, imperial, and some royal courts, charged with the duty of examining and reporting on petitions, requests, use of the seal, and similar matters (1528), also a referee (1546).) — c1420 Wynt. ix 552.
