[ME sauvenap (1312), salvenap (c1330), savenap (1337), saufenap (1391), sawnape (c1400), sanap (14–15th c.), last recorded a1440, OF *sauvenape (OED), f. sauver Sav(e v. and nap(p)e table-cloth (see Napkin n.).] ‘A strip of cloth placed over the outer part of the table-cloth to preserve it from being soiled’ (OED). —1331 Exch.
