Schaffro(u)n, -rone, n. Also: schaferrn, saferon; schaif(f)ron, chaiffroune, cheffroun, (schraifron); (s)chaiffer; Chafferon, Chauffron, Chamferon. [ME and e.m.E. shawfron (1465) in sense 2 below var. of chaffron and champrain. Of unknown origin.]
