Scone, n. Also: sconn-, skonn-. [Appar. shortened f. MDu. schoonbrot ‘fine bread, a kind of flat angular loaf’ (SND). Cf. MLG schönbrot wheaten, as opposed to rye, bread.] A scone, a ‘large round cake of wheat or barley flour baked on an iron plate’ (SND, s.v. Scone). —1513 Doug. vii ii 15.
