(e.m.E. and ME sumac (14th c.), sumach (1548), sho(o)macke (1580-81), shoemake (1600) ‘a preparation of the dried and chopped leaves and shoots of plants of the genus Rhus … , much used in tanning, also for dyeing and staining leather black … and medicinally as an astringent' (OED), OF sumac (13th c. in Larousse), med.
