Sincopation, n. [e.m.E. syncopation in the following sense (1597), earlier (c1532), contraction of a word by omission of sounds or letters, and (1547), failure of the heart's action, med. L. syncopation-, f. syncopare to affect with syncope.] A temporary shifting of the accent or beat in a piece of music, achieved by stressing the weak beat, = Sincopa n. c1550-c1580 Art of Music 27.
