Winter, Vinter, n.2 ‘An iron or rack made to hang on the bars of a fire-grate to support a kettle or pot; a trivet.’ (SND, Winter n.2) Cf. 17th c. Eng winter (1683), ‘in a hand-printing press, a block of wood about nine inches broad by nine deep, supporting the carriage. Perhaps … as a jocular antithesis to the summer or upper rail' (OED).
