Gartling, -lyn, n. Also: girtling, girtlang; greitling, greit lyne; gritlyne, grytlyne. [ling from F. ligne. Still in modern Shetland and northern dialects as grit-, gret(t)lin.] The 'great line' used in deep-sea fishing for cod, ling, etc. Also attrib. with bait, boit (boat).(a)1567 Edinburgh Testaments I. 31 b.
