(once) lulte (late 14th c.), thereafter only Sc.: appar. pointing to an OE. *lyltan perh. ultim. related to e.m.Du. lullepijp a shepherd's pipe (see Lilt-pype n.), MSw. lylla to lull, Norw. dial. lilla to shout, halloo, etc.] tr.
