Linyel, Lingle, n. [e.m.E. lingel(l, lyngell (1523), late ME. lynyolf (Prompt. Parv.), OF. ligneul, linoel (F. ligneul), repr. a med.L. lineolus or -um, dim. of L. līnea line (Line n.²). After 1611 appar. only Sc. and north. Eng. In the mod. Sc. dial. as lingle, lingal, -el, and north. Eng. dial. as lignel, liniel.] Shoemakers' or leatherworkers' waxed thread. — 1635 Dickson Wr. 196.
He had his elsin and linyel for sewing of leather, for he was a maker of tents 1681 Colvil Whig's Suppl. ii. 9.
