Lod-sterre, n. Also: lodsteir, -star, loadstar. [ME. lode-. lood(e)-sterre (Chaucer) and e.m.E. lode-starre, load-star, adopted in place of Lade-stern(e, Lade-star. Cf. also Lode-sterne.] A lodestar: fig. a ‘guiding star’, a ‘guide’; a shining example, a paragon. — ? c1500-c1512 Dunb. lxxxvii. 10.
