Low, n.3 [Appar. repr. an earlier inflected form of Loch n. (as *loh. inflected *loȝe > *lowe): cf. ME. (west-midl.) loȝe (Pearl), (south-western) the Lowe Lacheryn (Trevisa Higden), and mod. Eng. (chiefly north.) dial. and place-names low. An appar. early example occurs in the place-names Blacketloeshefed and Blaketlou (a 1300 Raine North Durh. App. 74). Cf. also Lowis n. pl.] A loch, lake.
