Moppat, Mappat, n. Also: -et, -it, mape(s)t. [Appar. corresp. to late ME. and e.m.E. (c 1440–1599) mappel, maple, mapolte (1466), -olde (1486), of somewhat uncertain origin, of which it is conceivably an alteration. Cf. also Mope n.]
A mop. Also attrib. with hadder, nele (nail) and schaft.As used for general cleaning, for gun-barrels, for applying liquids, etc.(1) 1512–13 Treas. Acc. IV. 465.
