Nether, Neather, Neither, Neyther, a.2 (pron.) and adv. (conj.) Also: -eir, -ir and neder, -ir. [Partly a var. of Naither and partly by adoption of e.m.E. and ME. neither, neyther, nether, neethyr (1462), neyder (14th c.), neder, -yr (1537), ME. neþer, neiðer (c 1250). Cf. also Nowther and Nother.The apparently early instances of nethir, nether (1388 Antiq. Aberd. & B. III. 294, 1515 Treas. Acc. V. 53) and neither (1529 Selkirk B. Ct. (ed.) 104) are perh. misreadings.]
