Penalté, -altie, -alty, n. Also: penaltey; penulté, -ultie, -ulty, -eltie; pennaltie, -elté, -eltie, -iltie; peaneltie, peineilltie, pinneltie. [e.m.E. penaltie (1512), -alté (1513), etc.: cf. Penalité n.] a. A penalty appointed or awarded for a crime, fault or breach of contract; chiefly, a financial penalty, a fine. b. The money paid as a fine; also, the money paid as pledge of fulfilment of a contract.For further examples see Incur v. 1 (1), Irrogat(e v. and Irrogat p.p.a. (1) 1570–2 Facs. Nat. MSS. III. lxii.
