(Stele sadill,) Steil(l) sadill, n. Also: steile- and -sadle. [Stele n. and Sadill n.] ? A war saddle fitted with protective steel plates (‘steels’). Cf. Stele bow.The OED suggestion of ‘a saddle with a steel frame’ fails to account for the examples where the metal is being cleaned and is therefore visible. 1503 Treas. Acc. II 218.
