Substantious, -cious, adj. Also: substantiouse, -e(i)ous, -ius, substanciouse, -ius, substentious, substancuows. [e.m.E. substauncyous (Caxton), OF substantieux (OED), med. L. substantiosus.]
1. Of a person: Wealthy, prosperous, rich in money and/or land. Passing into: That commands respect; reputable. Also absol. Also transf., of a place and its inhabitants. 1517 Treas. Acc. V 153.
