Postule, v. Also: -ulle, -il(l, poistyl(l. [L. postulāre to ask, request, desire, in med. L. (Brit.) in the following spec. sense (c 1125 in Latham), F. postuler (14th c. in Hatz.-Darm.): cf. e.m.E. postulate in this sense (1533–4), in general sense (1593).] tr. To nominate (a canonically disqualified person) to a prelacy in expectation of the Pope's dispensation. (See further Postulat n.1). — c1420 Wynt. vii 2910.
