Rone, Royne, adj. [e.m.E. rone (skin) (1572), roan (skinnes) (1583), also in 19th c. Eng., of doubtful origin. Perh. the same word as e.m.E. ron (1483), roan (1565), f. Roan, an old form of the place name Rouen Rowan(e.] Some kind of skin or leather. Also attrib. and comb.c1420 Wynt. viii 4802 (C).
