1. Indebted.Sc. a.1706 Watson (ed.) Choice Collection, Mare of Collingtoun (1869) 57:
Six Placks I am addebted.
Sc. 1822 Scott F. Nigel iv. 93:
His Majesty's maist gracious mother . . . justly addebted and owing the sum of fifteen merks.

2. Owed or due.Sc. 1824 Cases dec. in C. of Session ed. Shaw II. 673:
Thereafter Stirling and others . . . arrested these funds in the hands of Mr Bannatyne, as “addebted by him to the said Elizabeth Houston.”

[Said in the N.E.D. to be obs. Found in Older Sc. as early as 1513 (Douglas Eneid), and onwards. O.Fr. endeter, endetter, late Lat. indebitare.]
