ANG, n. “The beard or bristle on a seed, esp. a seed of bere or barley” (Marw. s.v. aan). [aŋ]
[Also in north. Eng. dial. (E.D.D.). Aan with same meaning occurs in Ork. also, but is regarded by Marw. as local form of Eng. awn, whereas ang is referred to O.N. angi, a spine, prickle, cogn. O.E. anga with the same meaning, Sw. dial. ang, finest root fibres.]
