Before the Reformation it was not lawful to lend money at interest, and, to evade this law, persons lending money received a yearly rent out of land. The profit of the money so lent was denominated annualrent, and thus the term annualrent came to be synonymous with interest.Sc. 1902 The Sc. Style Book I. 298:
Being an annualrent at the rate of £7, 2s. for every £100 of the foresaid sum of £10,118, 2s.
