ASSOCIATE, pa.p. Truncated form. Used specif. in regard to the Secession Church from the fact of its use in the title of Associate Presbytery chosen by the original seceders in 1733, later called the Associate Synod in 1744. The various sects into which the Church thereafter divided, Burgher and Antiburgher, with subsequent reunions, adopted the word into their own titles, as Associate Synod (Burgher), General Associate Synod (Antiburgher), Original Associate Synod, United Associate Synod, etc.Sc. 1806 J. When the Synod met at Glasgow on the 26th of August, these brethren met at Whitburn on the same day; and after two days spent in conference and prayer, they constituted themselves into a presbytery, under the designation of the Constitutional Associate Presbytery.Sc. 1918 R.
