BABORD, n. Larboard.Fif. (Buckhaven) 1833 Chambers's Edin. Jnl. No. 98 (14 Dec.) 364/3:
Mr R. Bonthron . . . recollects that, in his youth, the older fishermen . . . employed the term babord for larboard.

Of Gmc. origin, prob. through Fr. bâbord. O.N. bakborði, O.E. bæcbord, Norse bagbord, Sw. babord, Du. bakboord, L.Ger. bakbord, all = the left side of a ship, to which the steersman turned his back.
